The Last Zombie

They said we couldn’t think, couldn’t feel, we were in human. They didn’t understand the hunger that drove us, blinded us, empowered us.

The slaughtered us by the hundreds, by the thousands. It didn’t matter. For every one of us they killed, we turned a dozen of them until they were no more.

We fell on the animals next, devouring them one herd, one pack, one murder at a time.

Still we hungered for more.

I don’t know how it started, perhaps it was a collective epiphany brought on by sheer desperation, but one day we turned on each other.

The old fell first, the weak, those damaged by the war. Still the hunger drove us. A new war began as we raged against one another. Vast armies marched, collided, clashed and were destroyed.

I am all that is left.

Waiting, rotting, wondering how death will find me now that there is no one and nothing left to deliver it.

My teeth nash relentlessly, I can smell the last brain on the planet. I only wish I had thought to crack my skull and eat it before I gnawed off my arms.

I only wish I had realized then what I know now – Zombies hunger, but we do not starve.
