And now for something new!

I was cruising my other favorite blog – Free-Range Kids by Lenore Skenazy (the BEST mom in America) when I stumbled upon a note with a link to this video from Gever Tully and TED: Five Dangerous Things You Should Let Your Kids Do! After you watch this video, jump over to Gever’s site for the Tinkering School and from there you can order his newly completed book: 50Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do).

And, since I’m supposed to be writing about great gift books until the silly season passes us by, while you’re out there buying great books for brave parents and their Free-Range Kids, buy Lenore’s book too.  You can find it at most any book store worth the name!

Though I have not read it myself, I would also recommend the book A Nation of Wimps: The High Cost of Invasive Parenting by Hara Estroff Marano I know quite a few people who have read this book and loved it. A few have recommended it to me before stating that “It would be preaching to the choir”.

However, if you have a parent friend who maybe needs to be reminded that we all used to get play outside until the streetlights came on and walk to and from school all by ourselves, and own pocket knives (not cell phones so that we could be tracked at any given moment), and swim in filthy ponds and ditches and…  Oh my, I could go on forever…  These books are all good jumping off places.

For the parents who are already most of the way there and just need encouragement to stay the course against the growing tide of parental paranoia: that’s where Gever Tully comes in.  Also, pick up William Gurstelle’s books: The Art of the Catapult and Backyard Ballistics

Happy Holidays!  And here’s to living just dangerously enough to keep it exciting!!
